That magical morning returning from the Loess Hills became the source for various paintings.

Use of Color or Value: Subtle

Judges comments: Excellent paint handling—sensitive, subtle. Very physically deep composition. I enjoy the way that the strokes in the sky refer to those in the trees. “Half and Half” composition—very effective—pulls one through the composition.

Artistic Statement

What I see is the culmination of all that I have seen. As a result, there is a filter that I place between the scene and the viewer—a painting. It becomes a unique interpretation of my observation, ability, and sensitivity to the person, place, or thing. In rendering an observation I am stricken that objects are most beautiful ephemerally at a specific moment in time.

While I paint many things, landscape is my passion. The beauty of nature and its infinite variety is compelling. As I paint, there is a time when I control the painting, but there comes a time in the process when the subject emerges from the recesses of the canvas and then the painting has needs and wants. As I become the instrument of unveiling it, my painting becomes my battle ground. The ecstasy of painting comes as I participate in the release of what has drawn me to the subject in the first place.

The result is always beautiful to me and perhaps has a charm for others.
